Sporting biographies

The trend nowdays is to see in the bookshops bigraphies about sportsmen/women who are barely out of nappies. A case in point is Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney.Doubtless we will soon see Lewis Hamilton in print!Amir Khan the young Asian boxer out of Bolton is the next babe in arms queing outside the publishers. Has he got the key of the door yet? Have to check that out.

Most footballing biographies are dross.David Beckam had a book published two years ago that virtually had nothing to do with football, well not the football i know.Roy Keanes book two years ago was a case in point. All the hype before the book led us to believe we would see warts and all with regards to Man Utd but it was really quite tame just a few references to people Keane had "taken out" in a deliberate way.Countless Irishmen before him have done this but not in sporting events!Kevin Keegan was another simple northern lad in print a few years ago (at least towards the end of his careeer) This was a good read but only because of the anecdotes relating to Bill Shankly another football great from whom many books have spawned, the latest being by his neice (THe REal Bill Shankly) which did the rounds last Christmas!
